Amazon Senior Vice President of Devices, Alexa & Leo Panos Panay outlined a vision for personal computing centered on background artificial intelligence rather than discrete mobile applications during an appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt on Thursday, TechCrunch AI reported .

Panay argued that existing smartphone interactions trap users in a mechanical cycle of recalling tasks, opening apps, and executing commands. He predicted personal technology will pivot toward ambient devices that operate continuously in the background, utilizing sensors and AI models to infer what needs to be done without requiring constant manual direction.

The remarks coincided with Amazon's introduction of its Bee line of AI wearables. The hardware lineup includes a modular band that can be worn on the wrist or as a pendant, as well as a credit-card-sized device designed to snap magnetically onto the back of a smartphone.

The Bee devices passively capture audio to log notes, extract action items, and compile reminders throughout the day. To address data privacy, the devices process audio in real time and discard the raw recordings immediately after processing. Generated conversation transcripts are encrypted with device-managed keys, preventing access by outside parties, including Amazon staff, unless explicitly shared by the user.

Panay stressed that hardware operating in shared personal spaces must be engineered with user control and privacy as core baseline requirements.

Before joining Amazon, Panay spent 19 years at Microsoft, where he led the development of Surface hardware. Drawing on his product background, Panay noted that younger generations will increasingly expect systems to anticipate and understand user needs passively rather than demanding dedicated apps for each individual task.

Panay added that ambient hardware will not necessarily displace smartphones entirely. Instead, he described an overarching intelligence layer connecting various form factors into a cohesive, context-aware environment.
