Capcom to Integrate AI Tools into RE Engine Overhaul to Shorten Production Cycles
The publisher is upgrading its proprietary engine under project REX to streamline backend workflows without generating in-game assets.

Capcom is integrating artificial intelligence into its proprietary RE Engine to accelerate game development workflows, according to a report from Engadget (https://www.engadget.com/2276597/capcom-plans-to-use-ai-to-speed-up-the-game-development-process/) based on coverage from GameBiz and IGN.
The initiative, dubbed project REX, is intended to overhaul the company's core technology stack into what Capcom described during a company conference as a "game engine of the AI generation." Programmer Satoshi Ishida explained that expanding game asset sizes have significantly lengthened production schedules across the industry, making workflow efficiency a priority.
Capcom's integration focuses on backend automation rather than asset creation. The studio reiterated that it does not plan to publish AI-generated content in its games, aligning with statements from a previous shareholder Q&A where management noted it would explore AI assistance for graphics, audio, and programming without relying on generative content in final releases.
Shortening development cycles supports Capcom's strategy to revive legacy franchises following recent releases such as Onimusha: Way of the Sword. The studio's engine update reflects a wider industry trend, following Epic Games' integration of models like Claude and Gemini into Unreal Engine earlier this year.
