Modern Neural Networks Remain Interpretable at Trillion-Parameter Scale, Goodfire Researcher Reports
Nick Cammarata argues that most individual neurons can be understood even in the largest machine learning models.

Modern neural networks are significantly more interpretable than commonly believed, with most individual neurons remaining understandable even in models scaled to trillions of parameters, according to Goodfire researcher Nick Cammarata.
The findings, aggregated in an update by Techmeme (https://www.techmeme.com/261015/p48#a261015p48) on October 15, 2026, address a central assumption in machine learning research: that increasing the size and complexity of deep learning models inevitably deepens their opacity.
Cammarata's analysis indicates that the internal units of massive architectures do not become unreadable simply because the overall network expands. Instead, interpretability persists at the individual neuron level across models that reach the upper limits of modern parameter counts.
The observation offers a counterpoint to long-standing industry concerns that scaling frontier artificial intelligence models necessarily produces uninspectable black boxes, suggesting broader viability for mechanistic interpretability methods as architectures grow.
