OpenAI Introduces Space, Pages, and Collaborative Slides in Push Toward Workplace Software

OpenAI introduced a series of workplace productivity tools inside ChatGPT during its Dev Day developer conference in San Francisco on Tuesday, moving the artificial intelligence company into closer competition with enterprise software vendors like Microsoft.

The feature allows coworkers to collaborate inside ChatGPT alongside Dots, which OpenAI describes as AI agent personas capable of executing tasks on a user's behalf. Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman described Space during the presentation as a unified repository for team assets. "Your pages and files all live together in Space, like they would in a drive," Altman said. "But spaces feel alive." Users can assign automated instructions to individual pages, such as monitoring a team channel and updating document contents with new findings.

OpenAI also announced Pages, a word processing tool designed for joint work between humans and software agents. OpenAI positions Pages as a document format where users can write text, conduct research, generate charts, produce images, and visualize data.

Alongside Pages, the company revealed a presentation tool called collaborative slides. Users can generate presentation decks through conversational prompts within ChatGPT, after which team members and autonomous agents can edit content and leave comments directly on the slides.

The product rollout puts OpenAI in direct overlap with key workplace applications from Microsoft, its longtime partner and investor. As OpenAI expands its application layer into productivity software, incumbent software providers including Microsoft and Salesforce have spent the past year launching their own generative AI and agent products to defend their enterprise footprint.
