OpenAI Launches 'Dots' Always-On AI Agents at Dev Day 2026

OpenAI introduced a line of always-on AI agents dubbed Dots at its Dev Day 2026 conference, headlining a roster of more than 20 announcements with a direct push into autonomous personal software.

The rollout follows recent agentic releases across the sector, including Apple's Siri AI app and Meta's Muse AI. As reported by Mashable Tech (https://mashable.com/tech/openai-dev-day-dots-ai-agents), each Dot operates inside its own dedicated cloud computer rather than requiring local device setup, allowing the agent to run tasks, browse the web, and access tools continuously. OpenAI said the system is powered by its GPT-6 Astra model and connects to more than 4,000 third-party applications through a plugin ecosystem.

Users can open their Dot's cloud computer at any time to inspect active workflows, and can optionally grant the agent permission to connect directly to local laptops and companion devices. OpenAI also noted that organizations will be able to configure custom Dots for internal business processes.

The broader rise of autonomous agents—including independent tools like OpenClaw, previously known as Clawdbot and Moltbot—has sharpened industry debate around cybersecurity and data exposure. Last week, a group of major banks warned that handing over devices and financial credentials to autonomous systems like Dots, OpenClaw, and Muse raises the potential for AI-driven fraud and scams.

To address security risks, OpenAI said it has embedded guardrails against harmful behavior alongside an active monitoring system that can pause a Dot's operations. The platform also includes an auto-review system designed to prompt the user for explicit approval before the agent executes sensitive actions, such as changing account passwords.

Dots began rolling out immediately, but access is restricted to subscribers on OpenAI's $100-per-month Pro tier and Business Premium plans. Qualifying users receive their first Dot at no additional charge, with conversations exempt from standard ChatGPT usage caps for the first month. The feature is currently unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, where stricter regional AI regulations have also delayed rival rollouts like Siri AI.
