SpaceX's artificial intelligence unit has held talks about leasing computing capacity to Microsoft, according to a report from The Information aggregated by Techmeme (https://www.techmeme.com/261002/p17#a261002p17). The reported discussions indicate that SpaceX is moving into the neocloud business, opening access to its specialized computing infrastructure for external enterprise customers.

The move toward offering commercial cloud infrastructure comes despite initial reluctance from Elon Musk, according to the report. Neocloud providers typically operate dedicated, high-performance computing clusters designed specifically for training and running artificial intelligence models.

Persistent industry-wide demand for high-performance computing hardware has led major cloud and technology companies to look beyond standard supply channels. For Microsoft, securing external compute capacity offers an additional avenue to support expanding AI workloads amid hardware constraints.

Neither SpaceX nor Microsoft has publicly announced a completed agreement. The talks highlight how non-traditional operators with substantial hardware footprints are exploring third-party compute leasing to meet ongoing market demand.
