Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) has unveiled SmartDrive, a sailboat autopilot system built around a brushless linear actuator with an integrated electronic control unit (ECU). Introduced on Sept. 1, the device highlights the technology manufacturer's push into specialized nautical hardware as its marine business expands, according to reporting by Yahoo Finance (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/stocks/articles/garmin-grmn-autopilot-signals-where-184731033.html).

Engineered for sailboats and catamarans up to 45 feet in length with a maximum displacement of 33,000 pounds, SmartDrive pairs with the company's Reactor 40 Corepack to generate up to 1,050 pounds of maximum thrust. The unit incorporates fewer external components and cables than older linear actuators, allowing boat owners to install it as a direct replacement without requiring a complete rewiring job. The system connects with compatible Garmin multifunction displays via the NMEA 2000 network and can be controlled using an APK 10 keypad, a Reactor 40 wireless remote, or select Quatix marine smartwatches.

The hardware rollout follows solid financial performance across Garmin's marine business. In the second quarter of 2026, marine segment revenue increased 14% year over year to $341.4 million. For the first half of the year, marine sales rose 13% to $696.4 million. The unit recorded a 61% gross margin and a 29% operating margin, generating $100 million in quarterly operating income.

SmartDrive adds to a sequence of marine product releases from the company, including the LiveScope 2 sonar system and Garmin Signal VHF marine radios. These launches coincided with record enterprise results in the second quarter, during which total corporate revenue grew 11% year over year to $2.02 billion. Total operating income increased 30% to $616 million as overall gross margin widened to 62.4%.

Priced at $3,499.99 for the standalone actuator and starting at $4,499.99 for the Reactor 40 Sail Corepack bundle, SmartDrive targets a specific vessel category. Because the system is rated for vessels up to 45 feet, it does not target larger yachts or the broader powerboat fleet. Marine electronics upgrades also represent discretionary spending for vessel owners, making adoption sensitive to broader economic conditions.

While marine performance expanded, results across other Garmin business units were mixed. Second-quarter revenue in the outdoor segment declined 2% year over year. Meanwhile, the auto OEM division reported operating income of $3 million, improving from a prior-year loss but remaining small compared to the marine division's $100 million operating profit.

Institutional positioning has also shifted. Hedge fund ownership in Garmin dropped from 56 funds to 37 funds in the most recent quarter. However, short interest stood at 1.92% of float, indicating little organized negative positioning among market participants. As of Sept. 18, Garmin shares traded at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 23.98.
