Decentralized social network Bluesky is planning to launch integrated payment features within the next several months, marking its initial step toward platform monetization while eschewing conventional advertising models. Speaking on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, Chief Executive Officer Toni Schneider and Chief Operating Officer Rose Wang outlined how the company intends to formalize and expand upon the informal commercial activity, creator support, and fundraising campaigns currently taking place across the network.

Schneider, who took over as chief executive in March after Jay Graber stepped down, stated that the company wants to make digital transactions seamless for its user base. Under the planned system, users will be able to monetarily support accounts, creators, and fundraisers they encounter on the network. Schneider emphasized that the payment mechanism is intended to function interoperably across both the official Bluesky client and third-party applications built on the underlying network.

Addressing his transition into the executive role earlier this year, Schneider noted that his appointment initially drew skepticism from portions of the user base concerned that a leadership change signaled an unwanted pivot. Schneider noted that the platform's open architecture ensures users can depart for competing platforms if they disapprove of corporate changes, a dynamic he said keeps the leadership team accountable as it prepares to introduce native monetization.

Bluesky's leadership argued during the conference session that social media platforms do not need to rely on ad-based monetization strategies that compromise user experience. COO Rose Wang highlighted Schneider's previous background as CEO of Automattic, the company behind WordPress, pointing out that Automattic built a $10 billion business where $1 billion went to the parent company while the remaining $9 billion flowed to the broader ecosystem.

Wang also pointed to Bluesky's status as a Public Benefit Corporation, which she said reinforces its commitment to aligning revenue generation with its underlying mission. Because the network’s protocol prevents host lock-in, the executive argued that the company cannot mandate rigid platform monopolies. Instead, the strategic priority remains ensuring that economic value flows directly to the creators and community members who drive activity on the network.

In describing the current landscape of centralized social networks, Wang likened traditional platforms to a feudal system where users act as tenants working for corporate landlords and paying dues. Bluesky’s goal, according to company leadership, is to offer users ownership over their digital identities and personal social graphs within an open internet framework.

The rollout of digital payments represents the first phase in Bluesky’s broader strategy to monetize at the network level. As reported by TechCrunch, Wang emphasized that the initiative is focused on disrupting the infrastructure layer rather than merely introducing standalone consumer features to a single app.
