GrapheneOS has published a kernel driver patch to resolve severe performance issues introduced in Google's Android 17 QPR1 release for Pixel smartphones, according to an update shared via Hacker News (https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/42511-grapheneos-has-fixed-the-massive-android-17-qpr1-kernel-performance-regression).

Google released Android 17 QPR1 for Pixel devices on September 15, carrying a regression in the Pixel kernel driver tree that leads to stuttering, latency, and system freezes under memory pressure. The defect is severe enough to cause active processes to be terminated due to execution stalls. Because GrapheneOS incorporates updated Pixel firmware and drivers, the open-source mobile operating system was also affected until developers deployed a fix to their kernel repository on October 2, 2026.

In their announcement, GrapheneOS developers criticized Google's maintenance timeline, stating that while Google engineers often fix bugs within days, the company's release engineering and quality assurance workflows frequently delay public rollouts by two to three months. Even following public testing periods, GrapheneOS noted that Google typically requires four to six weeks to ship fixes for major regressions, leaving devices running degraded builds or seeing releases withheld entirely.

The project pointed to the Pixel 11 series, which received an update near the start of September 2026 at the 2026-09-01 patch level that omitted both Android 17 QPR1 and the September Pixel firmware and driver security patches. GrapheneOS suggested that standard Pixel users may not receive an official upstream fix from Google until December 2026.

To address recurring upstream delays, GrapheneOS stated it is expanding its testing and quality-control workload across the operating system using growing internal resources. The project is also working to reduce overall memory overhead, noting it has developed an optimization to eliminate most memory overhead from its secure spawning feature, which it aims to release before November 2026.
