Lowe's Partners With DoorDash and Alphabet's Wing to Pilot Drone Delivery

Lowe's has launched a drone delivery pilot in partnership with DoorDash and Alphabet's drone division, Wing, making it the first home improvement retailer to test aerial fulfillment. The service allows customers within a 5-mile radius of the Lowe's store in Matthews, North Carolina, to order from a catalog of more than 100 products through the DoorDash app. Orders are limited to payloads of approximately 2.5 pounds per flight, with delivery promised in as fast as 20 minutes for eligible addresses.

The retailer aims to address mid-project work interruptions when homeowners or contractors discover they are missing small, critical supplies. "Drone delivery fits perfectly because this was one of the friction points, like you're doing a project, and you're getting interrupted," said Seemantini Godbole, chief information and artificial intelligence officer at Lowe's. "[But] you never left your home, you never left your job site, and then you just continued with the project. That's the whole premise."

Lowe's selected the Matthews location to allow corporate engineering teams to monitor daily operations on site, collect feedback from store staff and DoorDash, and adjust workflows rapidly. The company indicated it may expand the service to additional markets if the pilot succeeds.

With this rollout, Lowe's joins retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Uber Eats that are testing or deploying commercial drones to shorten last-mile delivery times. Commercial drone operations continue to face regulatory scrutiny and community concerns regarding noise and privacy, though Lowe's said it is working with DoorDash and Wing to maintain compliance with federal and local airspace standards.
