Microsoft Erases Nonprofit Cloud Data During M365 License Retirement
An operational failure during the phaseout of legacy Business Premium grants has permanently deleted emails and files for an undisclosed number of charitable organizations.

Microsoft has acknowledged an operational error that resulted in the permanent deletion of cloud-hosted data for an undisclosed number of nonprofit organizations, according to reporting from TechRadar Pro (https://www.techradar.com/pro/microsoft-deletes-nonprofit-customers-m365-data-and-says-it-cant-get-it-back). The incident occurred during the retirement of the company's Microsoft 365 Business Premium Grant program, which historically provided eligible charitable groups with up to 10 free licenses.
Although Microsoft had established a transition window allowing organizations to export their records or switch to alternative tiers, the provider prematurely purged the cloud repositories of affected accounts whose subscriptions had expired. Microsoft confirmed that the deleted information is permanently unrecoverable and stated that it cannot supply customer logs, file inventories, or spreadsheets detailing what material was lost.
The unrecoverable data includes files hosted in Microsoft OneDrive as well as complete email archives, depriving affected nonprofits of historical correspondence, contract records, and donor documentation unless independent offsite backups existed. The issue primarily impacts smaller charitable organizations operating with lean technical staffs and minimal operating budgets.
Microsoft announced the retirement of the Business Premium grant in early 2025, notifying customers that renewals on or after July 1, 2025, would be the last under that tier, with licenses expiring on April 1, 2026. Under the planned migration path, organizations were intended to transition seamlessly to up to 300 granted licenses of Microsoft 365 Business Basic or move to discounted paid tiers without service interruption or data loss.
In response to the incident, Microsoft expressed regret and offered affected organizations a complimentary concierge service featuring specialist support to assist in provisioning new Microsoft 365 Business Basic environments. However, because the underlying files and mailbox contents were permanently erased during the purge, onboarding assistance cannot restore lost organizational records.
