Renewable Grid Demands Challenge Control Room Tools and Training, Nordic Study Finds
Research covering 15 Nordic transmission operators highlights how intermittent clean power and automated systems are redefining high-voltage grid control.

The growing shift toward distributed electricity systems is reshaping the daily responsibilities of operators tasked with maintaining high-voltage power grid stability, according to a report by TechXplore covering a study published in the International Journal of Human Factors and Ergonomics. As power generation from intermittent sources like wind and solar expands, control-room operators are managing more frequent balancing interventions to keep networks stable.
The study, led by Signe Svensson and colleagues, examined workplace feedback across 15 Nordic transmission system operators (TSOs). While automated tools are increasingly viewed as indispensable for modern grid operations, surveyed workers reported concerns surrounding platform reliability, operational stress, and shifting job skill requirements.
The researchers found that operators' receptivity to newer technology was influenced in part by their past experiences. Persistent reliance on overloaded tools and legacy systems originally designed for conventional energy generation exacerbated operational difficulties.
Deploying more advanced software alone is insufficient to address modern grid pressures, the authors argue. Transmission system operators must also adjust organizational structures, work design, and employee training to match new operating environments.
The research also points to an evolving definition of operational expertise. As routine manual skills become less central, control-room personnel are spending more time monitoring automated workflows, interpreting outputs, and troubleshooting system behavior. Some survey respondents questioned whether emerging technical expectations, such as understanding algorithms and debugging, align with their traditional operator roles.
The authors concluded that software, responsibilities, and organizational support must evolve together, recommending that grid operators participate directly in the design of future control-room systems.
