TikTok Bans Advertising Account for Alex Gibney's Elon Musk Documentary
Distributor Bleecker Street plans to appeal the permanent suspension, which TikTok attributed to political content policy violations.

TikTok has permanently suspended the advertising account promoting Musk, an upcoming documentary examining billionaire Elon Musk directed by Alex Gibney, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter and detailed by Engadget (https://www.engadget.com/2289782/tiktok-reportedly-bans-ads-for-musk-documentary-before-its-wider-us-release/).
The platform attributed the ban to a "repeated pattern of political content that violates its policies," according to reporting from THR. Film distributor Bleecker Street stated that it plans to appeal the suspension to restore the ad account.
The account suspension arrives as the nearly four-hour film expands its theatrical distribution. Musk debuted on Oct. 9 in a limited run across four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, generating roughly $70,000 in opening-weekend gross revenue before expanding to additional U.S. theaters on Oct. 16.
Bleecker Street has experienced advertising hurdles across several major social platforms during the film's promotional campaign. Meta and YouTube initially restricted trailer ads before reversing course, with Meta calling its initial block "an error" and YouTube confirming the campaign was cleared to run. X, which is owned by Musk, previously refused to run trailer advertisements for the documentary.
