UK government officials will consider extending the country's television license fee to cover on-demand video streaming platforms, according to a report from The Independent detailed by Engadget (https://www.engadget.com/2288294/the-uk-may-expand-the-bbc-license-fee-charging-residents-to-watch-streaming-services/). If enacted, the change would require residents to pay an annual fee to access services including YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.

Under current rules, the UK levies a standard annual license fee of £180 (approximately $239) on households that watch television programming, regardless of whether that viewing includes BBC content. Payment currently covers access to domestic terrestrial television channels, selected pay-TV services, live broadcasts delivered over streaming platforms, and on-demand programming on BBC iPlayer.

Proponents of expanding the fee argue that viewers increasingly watch television-style content on mobile devices and computers rather than traditional television sets, bypassing the fee mechanism that funds the public broadcaster. An unnamed source told The Independent that proponents view it as unfair that individuals can watch television content online while avoiding the license fee.

Additional revenue generated from the proposed expansion would reportedly fund local journalism and initiatives aimed at countering misinformation. The policy proposal follows financial strain at the BBC, which has seen a decline of 2 million paying license holders over the past five years. Despite the drop in paying households, data from YouGov indicates the BBC remains the most popular media platform in the UK.

The consideration comes as the public broadcaster expands its own presence on commercial digital networks. The BBC recently announced plans to launch a 24/7 streaming news channel on YouTube for audiences in the UK and the United States, adding to existing 24/7 feeds already operating in Australia, Kenya, Nigeria, and Poland.
