Fortinet Acquires Virtue AI to Expand Security Platform into Agentic AI Governance
The cybersecurity firm is adding runtime protection and automated validation tools to defend autonomous AI workflows.

Fortinet Inc. has agreed to acquire Virtue AI Inc. in a deal aimed at bolstering its enterprise cybersecurity platform with runtime protection and automated validation for agentic artificial intelligence systems, as first reported by SiliconANGLE. The transaction focuses on addressing the security challenges associated with autonomous AI workflows, which extend beyond basic text generation by directly executing enterprise tasks and interacting with business applications.
As corporate adoption shifts from conversational chatbots to agentic AI, enterprise security requirements have become significantly more complex. Autonomous agents operate similarly to digital workers, possessing access credentials, executing API calls, querying internal databases, and managing multi-step workflows across diverse cloud and on-premises environments.
This operational autonomy introduces distinct vulnerabilities. Because agentic AI systems dynamically determine actions based on context, updates to underlying models, prompts, or connected data sources can alter system behavior unexpectedly. Potential security threats include prompt injection attacks, excessive credential privileges, and data exposure through unmonitored execution pathways. Due to the speed at which autonomous systems operate, security flaws can escalate quickly across connected applications.
Traditional application security relies on point-in-time audits and pre-deployment testing, which are often insufficient for continuously adapting AI models. To counter this, Virtue AI provides tools for automated validation prior to deployment along with continuous runtime monitoring. These mechanisms give security teams visibility into an agent's specific decisions, tool invocations, and operational outcomes rather than limiting oversight to traffic flowing to and from large language models.
The acquisition aligns with Fortinet's core Security Fabric strategy, which integrates network, endpoint, and cloud defenses into a single management architecture. While Fortinet previously provided measures to secure initial access to AI systems, Virtue AI adds technology designed to police the actions an agent performs after receiving model outputs, such as triggering transactions, altering system configurations, or sending emails.
By integrating Virtue AI, Fortinet seeks to satisfy enterprise demand for consolidated platforms that govern dynamic AI behaviors without requiring additional standalone point products. Industry observers note that the success of the integration will depend on how effectively Fortinet incorporates these new capabilities into its existing telemetry infrastructure without introducing operational complexity for enterprise security teams.
"Security leaders should treat agentic AI as a new class of privileged digital worker, not merely another software-as-a-service application or chatbot," noted Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research, in analysis published by SiliconANGLE. Kerravala emphasized that organizations must implement continuous oversight, combining least-privilege permissions, identity governance, and detailed logging to link prompt inputs directly to agent actions.
