University of Essex Spin-Out Versatile RobotX Raises €1.17M to Commercialize Agricultural Robots
The Colchester-based startup plans to use the mix of venture capital and public grants to scale manufacturing and launch a Robotics-as-a-Service model.

Versatile RobotX, a Colchester, UK-based agricultural robotics startup spun out of the University of Essex, has raised more than €1.17 million (£1 million) in combined equity funding and non-dilutive grant awards to bring its automated farming systems to market, first reported by EU-Startups.
The financial backing combines private investment from the British Design Fund with support from the Innovate UK Growth Catalyst – Investor Partnerships Round 2 and grant funding from the Defra Farming Innovation Programme. Founded in July 2024 by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier and Dr. Vishwanathan Mohan, Versatile RobotX builds artificial intelligence and computer vision systems integrated into specialized robotic hardware to tackle manual agricultural tasks.
McDonald-Maier, who serves as chief executive officer of Versatile RobotX alongside his academic role heading the Robotics and Embedded Systems Research Group at the University of Essex, called the capital raise a critical milestone for the company. "It reflects the confidence that investors, Innovate UK, Defra, Freeport East and the University of Essex have shown in our vision," McDonald-Maier said, adding that the funds will allow the business to transition from field trials toward commercial deployment while addressing systemic labor shortages and food security concerns.
The startup has developed two main hardware platforms: the Fruit and Vegetable Autonomous Picker and the Hydroponic Robotic Harvester. The autonomous picker utilizes machine vision, machine learning models, and precise mechanical manipulation arms to identify and harvest produce without damaging crops. The hydroponic system is tailored for soilless farming setups, offering capabilities to harvest mature crops and transplant younger plants between growing stations to optimize crop rotation workflows.
The company's systems have already been validated through field tests with prominent UK agricultural operations, including food suppliers JEPCO and Wilkin & Sons of Tiptree. According to Mohan, chief technology officer at Versatile RobotX and head of the AgriRobotics Laboratory at the University of Essex, conversations with commercial growers emphasized that cost, reliability, and deployment friction remain the primary barriers preventing farms from adopting automated equipment.
To overcome adoption hurdles, Versatile RobotX is structuring its commercial rollout around a Robotics-as-a-Service (RaaS) model. "This funding package will help us scale manufacturing readiness, strengthen customer engagement and demonstrate how Robotics-as-a-Service can provide a practical route to adoption for farms of all sizes," Mohan said, noting that the expansion will also support developing robotic tools for a broader variety of crop types.
The spin-out has received ongoing tech transfer and commercialization assistance from University of Essex Enterprise Limited, as well as support from EPSRC and Freeport East. Commenting on the public-private funding combination, Paul Laniran, innovation lead for agriculture at Innovate UK, highlighted how the structure helps bridge academic research and commercial software deployments. "Through support from Innovate UK, Versatile RobotX has been able to advance the development of its robotics technology and work closely with growers to explore its practical application," Laniran noted.
Versatile RobotX plans to deploy the capital immediately to scale up its production capabilities, deepen partnerships with commercial growers, and accelerate the rollout of its low-cost agricultural systems across the UK and international markets.
