As artificial intelligence and automated systems increasingly absorb routine administrative and operational workloads across industries, the primary long-term challenge facing society will be determining how humans utilize their resulting free time rather than merely managing economic labor displacement, according to veteran enterprise technology advisor Monty McCoy.

In a commentary published by The Next Web, McCoy—a technology consultant with more than three decades of experience designing enterprise infrastructure, executing corporate transformations, and evaluating emerging autonomous systems—argued that the current discourse around artificial intelligence relies on overly simplistic assumptions regarding societal adaptation. Drawing a parallel to his personal experience recovering from a physical injury, where rehabilitation was non-linear and marked by unexpected setbacks, McCoy noted that the broader technological transition will similarly advance through unpredictable cycles of rapid breakthroughs, operational stalls, and cultural resistance.

Central to McCoy’s analysis is what he terms the workplace "whirlwind"—the constant barrage of electronic communications, administrative overhead, internal meetings, and repetitive operational tasks that fill the average worker's schedule. While employees frequently complain about the friction caused by these demanding duties, McCoy emphasized that modern workers have deeply tied their daily routines, sense of purpose, and personal identities to the structure provided by this continuous activity.

The analysis cautions that eliminating these operational demands without proactively helping individuals establish new sources of meaning creates a psychological and social vacuum. As autonomous software agents increasingly execute complex, end-to-end workflows that previously demanded entire corporate teams, the time liberated by automation will not automatically translate into creative pursuits, educational development, or community service. Instead, McCoy warned that individuals are far more likely to fall back on an attention economy explicitly engineered to capture free time through mobile devices, algorithmic social media feeds, and on-demand digital entertainment.

The shift toward an automated economy will be further complicated by the expansion of physical artificial intelligence beyond digital software interfaces. As autonomous systems enter physical infrastructure—including public roadways, industrial factories, logistics warehouses, commercial venues, and private residences—McCoy noted that the disruption to established human daily schedules will expand far beyond office environments, introducing new layers of operational and social unpredictability.

If enterprise leaders and policymakers fail to address what replaces routine human labor, McCoy warned that the resulting social void could spark negative systemic consequences. Rather than fostering a more connected, creative, and human-centric culture, unguided automation risks increasing public distraction, cultural fragmentation, political outrage, tribalism, and compulsive consumerism. Additionally, the transition could aggravate social anxiety and political friction between populations that capture economic gains from automated efficiency and those who perceive themselves as economically pushed aside.

To counter these risks, McCoy urged individuals to adopt a broader framework of personal ownership as intelligent systems become ubiquitous. While contemporary tech policy discussions often center on digital data ownership, McCoy stressed that citizens must exercise far greater intentionality over their time, cognitive focus, technical capabilities, and overarching sense of purpose, resisting the prevailing habit of surrendering personal agency to automated platforms for mere convenience.

At the same time, McCoy emphasized that artificial intelligence holds immense potential to enhance human independence when deployed thoughtfully. For example, autonomous transportation systems could preserve personal mobility for aging individuals long after traditional driving becomes difficult, while automated tools could remove physical constraints and repetitive burdens, enabling workers to refocus on roles that require human judgment, curiosity, creative problem-solving, and deep interpersonal connection.

Concluding his assessment, McCoy cautioned against equating technological advancement with genuine human progress. He argued that society must confront fundamental questions about what constitutes a meaningful life when efficiency is no longer the primary economic constraint, calling on individuals to take active control of their time and purpose before automated systems define those parameters by default.
