Artificial intelligence startup Anthropic has finalized an infrastructure agreement with United Kingdom-based compute provider Nscale valued at approximately $45 billion, according to reporting on Wednesday by CNBC Technology.

Under the terms of the arrangement, Anthropic will secure roughly 460 megawatts of computing capacity at a data center complex that Nscale is developing in West Virginia. The details were shared by two individuals with direct knowledge of the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the commercial terms remain confidential.

The planned West Virginia installation is scheduled to become fully operational toward the end of 2027. Once online, the infrastructure will leverage Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin processors to support Anthropic’s workload requirements, the sources said.

The cloud commitment arrives after Anthropic publicly acknowledged earlier this year that rapidly mounting user demand for its Claude models and software suite had placed an "inevitable strain" on its existing server footprint. Those capacity limitations directly affected platform "reliability and performance," particularly during peak operating hours for its user base.

In response to those infrastructure bottlenecks, Anthropic has moved aggressively over recent months to construct a broader ecosystem of computing and hardware partners. The company has entered into a series of capacity and technology agreements with several major industry players, including Advanced Micro Devices, Elon Musk’s SpaceX, Google, and Broadcom.

The hardware expansion comes at a pivotal moment for the corporate trajectory of the artificial intelligence startup. Anthropic confidentially submitted its initial public offering prospectus with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in June, and executives have already initiated preliminary discussions with prospective investors.

The substantial investment highlights the ongoing pressure on Anthropic to justify its $965 billion market valuation to Wall Street. The startup is navigating an increasingly competitive market landscape for foundation models, facing stiff competition from legacy technology giants like Google as well as rival developer OpenAI.

As Anthropic prepares to pitch prospective public market investors, its underlying compute strategy has become an essential pillar of its growth thesis. Demonstrating an ability to scale physical data center capacity while maintaining reliable service levels will remain central to how the company presents its long-term roadmap.
