Apple Outlines Hardware Security Architecture Behind New Siri AI Listening Features
A technical document published alongside new Apple Watch hardware details how raw ambient audio remains isolated inside the S11 chip's Secure Exclave.

During its recent iPhone Duo hardware launch, Apple introduced a suite of new artificial intelligence features under the Siri banner designed to interpret ambient sound, including Siri Recap, Live Rewind, Sound Recognition, and Music Recognition. Alongside the product announcements, the company published a technical document outlining the security architecture intended to safeguard user privacy while processing live audio inputs, as first reported by The Verge.
The document addresses concerns surrounding ambient listening capabilities by specifying that Apple cannot access raw audio streams processed by the new features. According to the company, incoming sound data is managed exclusively within dedicated hardware components, is never saved to system storage as an audio file, and remains completely shielded from third-party applications, the underlying operating system, and Apple itself.
At the core of this privacy model is the S11 silicon chip, which powers the newly introduced Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. The S11 includes a hardware-isolated compartment known as the Secure Exclave, built directly into the processor to execute sensor data computations independently from the rest of the device's computing architecture.
Data evaluated inside the Secure Exclave cannot be extracted by watchOS, third-party software, end users, or Apple engineers. Raw audio captured by the microphone travels immediately into this isolated block on the smartwatch, where initial processing takes place to detect environmental sounds, musical tracks, or spoken language without creating text transcriptions or storing audio files.
To prevent persistent data retention, the incoming audio exists solely within a temporary buffer inside the protected hardware compartment. This memory structure operates as a continuously overwritten stream that functions strictly within the isolated enclave, ensuring that no permanent or temporary audio recording is ever generated during operation.
Apple emphasized that users maintain direct control over when Audio Intelligence functionality is engaged. For instance, triggering the Live Rewind capability requires manual intervention, obligating users to double-tap the Digital Crown on the smartwatch each time they wish to initiate the feature rather than allowing continuous background recording.
When processing tasks require data transfer between a smartwatch and an paired iPhone, the transmission is secured using hardware-to-hardware encryption. Information passes directly between the Secure Exclave components on both devices, maintaining isolation throughout the entire transfer chain.
For text outputs generated by tools such as Siri Recap and Live Rewind, users retain explicit authority over which transcriptions or summaries are stored. Any saved text synced across Apple devices relies on end-to-end encryption, requiring users to set up a device passcode and maintain two-factor authentication on their iCloud accounts.
