Elon Musk Confirms SpaceX Turbine Foundry to Unblock AI Power Demands
SpaceX is constructing a specialized casting facility in Texas to produce natural gas turbine components as data center energy needs strain global supply chains.

In an effort to bypass critical infrastructure delays in the artificial intelligence sector, Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX is constructing a specialized metals foundry in Bastrop, Texas. Posting on social media platform X, Musk stated that while SpaceX and Tesla are both striving to build 100 gigawatts per year of solar manufacturing capacity, natural gas remains necessary to support grid growth over the next few years. He noted that the primary bottleneck in manufacturing natural gas turbines is the casting of specialized blades and vanes, claiming that producing these components in-house at SpaceX could accelerate turbine deployment by up to 18 months.
The confirmation follows real estate acquisitions and job postings indicating the aerospace company's plans, as first reported by TechCrunch AI. SpaceX acquired roughly 830 acres adjacent to its Starlink manufacturing plant in Bastrop between March and June, according to research by due diligence analyst Corey Trinetti. Subsequent job listings explicitly referenced a dedicated foundry for turbine blades and vanes, a facility strategy also highlighted in a report by The Information.
Power availability has joined semiconductor shortages as a central constraint for artificial intelligence expansion. While graphics processing units like Nvidia's Blackwell chips still carry multi-month fulfillment delays, energy constraints are increasingly blocking new facility builds. The International Energy Agency anticipates that global electricity consumption by data centers will roughly double by 2030. Concurrently, major equipment supplier GE Vernova has reported that its turbine manufacturing capacity is effectively sold out through 2030 due to skyrocketing demand from tech companies including Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI, which are building off-grid, gas-fired facilities to supply power directly to their data centers.
The specific components SpaceX intends to produce present extreme manufacturing hurdles. Turbine blades in a generator's hottest section operate at temperatures ranging between 3,000 and 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit—several hundred degrees above the melting point of their underlying metal alloys. To survive, each blade must be cast as a single, seam-free crystal inside a vacuum furnace and fitted with internal cooling passages and thermal coatings. Currently, only four companies globally possess the technical capability to cast these large-scale single-crystal components, and all four operate at maximum capacity.
Should SpaceX succeed in operating its own casting operations, Musk's interconnected technology enterprises could overcome a supply chain constraint that affects the entire AI industry. Obtaining internal production of key turbine components would allow Musk's AI operations to bring online new computing centers faster than rivals who depend on the limited external supply chain.
However, expanding natural gas generation to support AI infrastructure has raised growing legal and environmental concerns. In Memphis, Tennessee, where Musk's AI initiative has operated gas turbines to power its Colossus data center since 2024, the NAACP has repeatedly accused the company of running equipment without required federal environmental permits and pollution mitigation systems. Local research from the University of Memphis indicated a slight increase in surrounding air pollution, where turbine emissions can include formaldehyde and smog-forming chemicals associated with respiratory conditions and cancer.
Similar environmental conflicts are emerging in other major technology hubs. In Virginia's primary data center corridor, an evaluation commissioned by the Piedmont Environmental Council using the Environmental Protection Agency's COBRA health-impact model determined that emissions from eight continuously operated gas turbines at a single data center could affect more than 2.5 million residents across multiple counties. The analysis estimated these emissions could result in $53 million to $99 million in annual health-related costs and lead to between 3.4 and 6.5 premature deaths each year.
