Google Drive Integrates Gemini AI to Assist Users with File Organization
The new 'Organize My Files' feature recommends folder placement for loose documents, but requires a paid subscription and properly named files.
Google has launched a new artificial intelligence capability designed to streamline document management within Google Drive, leveraging its Gemini AI engine to help users manage cluttered cloud storage accounts. The feature, officially named 'Organize My Files in Drive,' generates automated placement recommendations for unorganized files based on a user's existing folder structure.
The search giant initially began testing the capability during the autumn of last year before commencing a broader rollout to Workspace accounts in June, as detailed in a report by Engadget. Rather than automatically executing file relocations, the system presents organizational suggestions that require explicit user approval before any documents or media are transferred.
Access to the organizational tool is restricted to paid account tiers across individual and enterprise users. Individual subscribers must hold a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra plan to view the feature within the Drive web interface. The $20-per-month AI Pro tier provides five terabytes of cloud storage and a YouTube Premium Lite subscription alongside the AI functionality.
For institutional clients, the feature is available to Business, Enterprise, and Education Workspace accounts. However, platform rules prevent users from utilizing corporate accounts to organize personal items. Furthermore, the AI integration functions strictly within private directories and cannot be used to manage shared files or collaborative folders.
To access the feature, users must ensure that Smart features are active within their Google Workspace account settings, an option enabled by default across most geographical markets. When active, Gemini can suggest creating new folders and allows users to preview prospective file moves through pop-up hover cards.
The tool's effectiveness depends heavily on existing file naming conventions, as Gemini does not automatically rename files. As noted by Engadget, the algorithm appears to generate recommendations based on file titles and folder structures rather than analyzing document text, meaning accounts with numerous untitled files will see limited utility without manual preparation.
