Meta’s newly released Muse AI assistant has climbed to the top of Apple’s U.S. App Store rankings, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT shortly after its debut, according to reporting from Tech Startups (https://techstartups.com/2026/09/21/metas-muse-ai-agent-overtakes-chatgpt-claude-and-grok-to-become-no-1-free-app-in-u-s/). The rapid early uptake marks an initial milestone for Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg’s push to bring autonomous consumer software into everyday use.

Sensor Tower research data cited by CNBC shows that Muse became the No. 1 free iPhone application in the United States on Friday, accumulating approximately 730,000 downloads during the roughly five days following its Sept. 8 release. Sensor Tower noted that Muse’s early post-launch downloads surpassed initial launch-window totals for OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and SpaceXAI’s Grok, though the firm cautioned that staggered rollouts across iOS and Google Play make direct comparisons imperfect.

The application is powered by Meta’s Muse Spark family of models and is designed to execute tasks across the web independently, such as organizing email inboxes, completing forms, and managing browser-based activity. Meta is betting that autonomous agentic software can expand beyond technical and developer circles to find traction with general consumers.

Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon discussed the potential market shift on CNBC’s "Squawk on the Street," noting that most agentic use cases have historically not catered to mainstream users, while products like Muse may broaden consumer adoption. However, early download spikes do not guarantee sustained engagement, as demonstrated by initial interest surges for previous tools like OpenAI’s Sora and Meta’s Vibes feature.

Platform trust and merchant access remain immediate hurdles. Amazon has blocked the Muse bot from accessing its marketplace, GeekWire reported Sunday, citing privacy and security concerns regarding third-party software making purchases on behalf of users. An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire that external applications offering to buy goods for consumers must operate transparently and respect merchant decisions regarding platform access.

Other digital commerce platforms are collaborating with Meta. Shopify Chief Executive Tobias Lütke said Monday that the e-commerce provider is working with Meta to facilitate agentic checkout through Muse for participating merchants. Meta offers Muse as a free download, alongside subscription tiers priced at $20 and $100 per month based on usage. Following the launch metrics, Meta shares rose more than 11% on Monday, and Wells Fargo lifted its price target to $796.
