OpenAI Forms Math Advisory Group at IAS After Claiming 100+ Solved Open Problems

OpenAI has established an independent advisory body hosted at the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in Princeton, New Jersey, intended to give academic mathematicians input into its research, according to a report by TechCrunch AI (https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/21/openai-forms-math-advisory-group-as-its-ai-resolves-more-than-100-open-problems/).

The initiative, named The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, follows OpenAI's abrupt publication of a solution to the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize problem. Alongside the panel's launch on Monday, OpenAI claimed that the same internal model has resolved more than 100 additional open problems across most areas of mathematics.

The sudden pace of these reported breakthroughs has met resistance within the academic community. Earlier this month, 25 Fields Medal-winning mathematicians signed an open letter warning that AI laboratories are threatening their intellectual discipline as tech companies compete to solve famous mathematical problems.

OpenAI stated that the new advisory group will evaluate the significance of new findings and help coordinate their public release. Members will serve without compensation, retain control over their membership, and remain free to publish independent views or offer unsolicited advice.

However, the panel will have no authority to govern the speed or direction of OpenAI's technical pipeline. OpenAI noted in its announcement that the group will not advise on pacing internal work. In a separate statement, the IAS reiterated that it holds no decision-making power over any AI lab and that all corporate responsibility rests with the company.

OpenAI named nine prominent mathematicians as initial members of the council. Only one founding member—IAS mathematician Camillo de Lellis—was among the signatories of the earlier open letter organized by Fields Medalists.
