Microsoft workers have begun tracking their individual artificial intelligence expenditures alongside their compensation details on an internal self-reporting document, revealing a median spend of roughly $300 over a 28-day billing period, according to reporting by The Next Web.
The shared spreadsheet, which has long served as a voluntary platform for employees to anonymously compare salaries, cash bonuses, and stock awards, recently added a dedicated column for monthly AI resource consumption. Across approximately 350 submitted entries, individual costs varied significantly, reaching a peak high of $28,000 for a single worker over the 28-day window.
Departmental figures highlight substantial disparities in resource usage across Microsoft's internal teams. Staff in the CoreAI group registered the highest median spend at $975, followed by the Security division at $526 and the Microsoft AI unit at $490. The customer and partner organization recorded the lowest median monthly usage at $134, while also generating the $28,000 outlier entry. For context, a standard enterprise Microsoft 365 Copilot license costs $30 per month, a tool deployed to 743,000 workers at consulting giant Accenture earlier this year.
Despite the elevated costs logged by some staff members, an analysis first reported by Business Insider found no measurable correlation between heavy AI consumption and traditional workplace rewards. The outlet observed no direct link between high individual AI expenditure and higher performance bonus ratings, annual merit raises, or elevated promotion rates.
The underlying dataset carries several built-in caveats. The figures are entirely self-reported and voluntary, representing roughly 350 individuals out of Microsoft's broader workforce of approximately 223,000 employees. In response to the findings, Microsoft noted that the internal usage-tracking tool referenced by staff remains in an early phase of testing.
The practice of itemizing employee-level tool usage also intersects with regulatory hurdles in international markets, particularly in Europe. Under German labor regulations, employee works councils retain co-determination rights over technical software capable of monitoring employee conduct or productivity. Precedents set by Germany's Federal Labour Court in 1975 dictate that a system needs only the technical capability to monitor performance—rather than explicit intent—to require council approval.
The internal spreadsheet metrics reflect a growing interest across the technology sector in measuring how corporate staff utilize digital tools and automated workflows. Enterprise automation startups have attracted significant investment to address workplace efficiency, including process-observation firm Skan AI, which previously secured $63 million in funding to monitor employee routines and build automated software agents.
