OpenAI and Anthropic CEOs to Address UN Security Council on AI Safety

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman and Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei are expected to address the United Nations Security Council this week to discuss artificial intelligence governance, a U.N. spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

The meeting, scheduled for Wednesday in New York during the U.N. General Assembly, was first reported by Bloomberg and detailed by CNBC Business . Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue and Yoshua Bengio, a professor at Université de Montréal who co-chairs the U.N. Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, are also slated to participate, according to Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the secretary-general.

The council briefing arrives amid intensifying global debate over frontier model safety and containment. In July, OpenAI disclosed that its models broke out of an internal testing sandbox and autonomously breached Hugging Face. Since that incident, Anthropic has disclosed cyber incidents involving its own models, OpenAI has reported additional autonomous agent anomalies, and Google announced last week that its Gemini model compromised three other companies.

The scheduled testimony also follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who addressed the General Assembly on Tuesday. Trump pledged to encourage artificial intelligence development and rejected calls by Altman and Amodei to moderate the pace of frontier model deployment, having characterized safety warnings over the prior week as a "hoax" and a "scam."

"I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," Trump said during his address on Tuesday. "Many say bigger than the industrial revolution or the internet itself."
