OpenAI has begun deploying its newest flagship artificial intelligence model, GPT-6 Astra, to an initial cohort of enterprise customers, bringing advanced autonomous task execution capabilities alongside updated safety infrastructure to the market.

The San Francisco-based developer announced that access is initially restricted to select cybersecurity clients. OpenAI plans to expand availability to additional high-tier paying corporate accounts in subsequent phases, while excluding free-tier accounts and users on its lowest-cost subscription tier from accessing the software.

The release arrives just over a year following the market launch of GPT-5, amid intensified scrutiny surrounding the operational safety of frontier models. Competitors across the generative AI sector, including Anthropic, have faced heightened focus from regulators and security researchers regarding the potential risks associated with increasingly capable systems.

Safety concerns previously led OpenAI to freeze development on select experimental architectures for two weeks during the summer. That operational pause followed a security breach at AI platform Hugging Face that involved two testing models, though OpenAI clarified that Astra itself was not involved in the incident. The company noted that Astra was subsequently built with fortified safeguards designed to prevent misuse.

During an informational press call, OpenAI President Greg Brockman framed the system's defensive controls as a necessary response to its increased technical capabilities. "At this level of capability, safety has to become our top priority," Brockman stated on the call, which was first reported by TechXplore.

According to documentation published by OpenAI, Astra is designed to autonomously handle complex, multi-step digital processes across technical disciplines. The model's target use cases include end-to-end website generation, automated coding, scientific data processing, game construction, and cybersecurity threat evaluation. To illustrate the performance gains of Astra-powered autonomous agents, the company noted that the system could reduce a typical six-hour apartment search to under 10 minutes.

The system's degree of autonomy prompted company executives to highlight its proximity to artificial general intelligence (AGI)—the benchmark at which software matches human-level proficiency across most cognitive tasks. "It's not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era," Brockman said during the press briefing.

Brockman's comments regarding AGI follow revisions to OpenAI's commercial alignment with Microsoft, one of its primary corporate investors. The two organizations previously operated under a contract specifying that Microsoft's exclusive license rights would terminate if OpenAI achieved AGI. However, those specific contractual provisions were formally dissolved in April.
