OpenAI Engineer Arrested After Recording Device Discovered in Executive Conference Room
Federal prosecutors charged 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan with attempting to intercept communications after OpenAI traced a hidden bug using internal AI models.

Federal authorities have arrested an OpenAI engineer after the company discovered a hidden recording device inside an executive conference room, according to reporting from The Verge and The San Francisco Standard.
The employee, 35-year-old Abdulrahman Alfozan, faces federal charges of using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications. Alfozan was taken into custody on Friday and made his initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.
According to reporting originally published by The San Francisco Standard and detailed by The Verge (https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/1010642/openai-employee-arrested-recording-device), the recording device was found plugged into a television's USB port inside an executive meeting room. The hardware had reportedly been covered in toilet paper and installed on or around September 28.
In a statement regarding the incident, OpenAI said it used its internal artificial intelligence models to analyze the hardware and determine its origin, leading security personnel to identify that an employee had planted the unit several days prior. OpenAI subsequently terminated Alfozan and referred the case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
OpenAI stated that it has found no evidence that model weights, source code, or customer data were accessed or exfiltrated during the incident. The company noted that the FBI's investigation remains ongoing.
