OpenAI Expected to Unveil 'Aeon' AI Agent at 2026 DevDay to Counter Meta and Google Rivals

OpenAI is preparing for its 2026 DevDay developer conference on Tuesday, where the artificial intelligence developer is widely expected to introduce a continuous consumer AI agent codenamed Aeon. However, the category continues to face security and privacy challenges. At least one patched security vulnerability previously enabled attackers to compromise user accounts, while early users of Meta's Muse reported unverified incidents where the assistant shared private home addresses or read personal messages without permission.

Aeon is expected to run on OpenAI's latest frontier model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company claims brings enhanced capabilities in software engineering, computer control, scientific research, and cybersecurity. OpenAI leadership has positioned the model as a landmark step toward artificial general intelligence. "I think it’s not unreasonable to feel that we are now in the AGI era," OpenAI President Greg Brockman said during a press briefing earlier this month.

OpenAI faces distinct distribution hurdles compared to its peers. Meta integrates Muse across services reaching billions of social users, while Google connects Gemini Spark directly into its established productivity and operating software ecosystems. OpenAI sought to narrow this gap at last year's conference by introducing the ChatGPT Apps SDK, integrating third-party services like Canva, Spotify, and Zillow into its chat interface.

Beyond Aeon, DevDay 2026 rumors point to possible updates on OpenAI's AI hardware initiative with designer Jony Ive, potential model revisions such as Astra 6.1, and further claims regarding AGI. Delivering a competitive, secure agent platform remains a primary strategic objective for OpenAI as it narrows its product focus ahead of a planned initial public offering.
