OpenAI Launches Apple Messages Integration for ChatGPT on macOS

OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plugin for its desktop ChatGPT application on macOS, allowing users to connect the artificial intelligence assistant directly to their iMessage data, ZDNET reported.

The integration enables the desktop AI client to execute actions within Apple's messaging platform, including drafting and dispatching texts on behalf of the user. To prevent accidental transmissions, the software requires manual authorization prior to sending a text, though users have the option to grant permanent approval for specific chat threads.

Beyond dispatching outgoing messages, the plugin permits users to query their historical text database using natural language commands. By incorporating the "@Messages" handle into a ChatGPT prompt, users can request summaries of past exchanges filtered by recipient names, specific terms, or broader conversational topics.

In testing conducted by ZDNET, querying the plugin to find text messages regarding a specific subject—such as past conversations about a family pet—allowed the chatbot to highlight key discussion topics and surface historical details, including multi-year veterinary updates stored across older text threads.

The integration also introduces analytical capabilities focused on personal communication styles. When prompted to evaluate a conversation, ChatGPT assesses the overall tone and recurring topics within the text exchange, offering suggestions on how to rephrase messages to diminish defensiveness and encourage constructive responses during contentious interactions.

To access the plugin, Mac users must update the ChatGPT application to its latest software version, navigate to the Integrations directory within the Settings menu, and install the Apple Messages extension. Functionality requires explicit system permissions on macOS to grant the application access to stored message data.

The new integration comes amid broader legal challenges facing the artificial intelligence firm. Ziff Davis, the parent company of ZDNET, filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, alleging unauthorized use of its media content to train and operate OpenAI's models.
