OpenAI announced on Tuesday the release of ChatGPT Images 2.5, an upgraded image generation model that introduces a visual prompting feature named Sketch. The update provides users with new methods to guide image creation by combining text prompts with rough canvas drawings created directly within the platform.

The newly introduced Sketch functionality allows users to trigger an interactive drawing canvas inside their existing chat window. By entering the command "@Sketch" into the chat input, an embedded interface pops up, enabling users to create freehand doodles using a mouse or touchscreen input.

Once a drawing is completed on the canvas, users can provide additional text instructions specifying how the platform should interpret and expand upon the visual draft.

As first reported by The Verge, initial testing showed that simple mouse-drawn sketches could be successfully converted into photorealistic imagery according to provided textual guidance.

The update also expands interactive editing controls by enabling users to leave targeted comments directly on specific areas of generated visual outputs. This regional commenting feature allows for precise adjustments, such as modifying the color of an object or subject's features, without requiring a complete regeneration of the image.

Underlying performance enhancements in ChatGPT Images 2.5 include output with "more natural lighting and richer textures," according to OpenAI. The company noted that the updated system demonstrates improved consistency when executing precise editing requests "across multiple turns" of conversation.

OpenAI further stated that image generation latency has been cut by "up to 50% compared with Images 2.0," speeding up response times for visual queries.

The new Sketch tool and ChatGPT Images 2.5 update are immediately accessible across web, desktop, and mobile platforms. The feature rollout covers general ChatGPT accounts as well as users on ChatGPT Work and Codex tiers.
