Pentagon Deploys Custom OpenAI and xAI Tools Across Military Portal

The U.S. Department of Defense has added military-specific iterations of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok to its secure software suite, granting up to 3 million service members and civilian personnel access to customized generative artificial intelligence models, as first reported by TechCrunch AI.

The tools, branded as ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are accessible through GenAI.mil, a consolidated digital platform introduced by the Pentagon last year. The system was established to allow military staff to leverage frontier commercial software while isolating government workflows from standard consumer data collection mechanisms that typically present privacy risks.

Internal adoption of the military AI infrastructure has scaled quickly since its launch. Defense Department metrics indicate that more than 1.7 million individual workers out of the agency's 3 million total workforce have created accounts and accessed the platform.

Developed through the vendor's OpenAI for Government initiative, ChatGPT Mil provides a user interface structured similarly to the commercial edition of ChatGPT, incorporating features for project files, custom GPT builds, and conversational queries. Pentagon officials plan to utilize the software for unclassified administrative duties, policy drafting, logistics planning, and managing heavy documentation workloads.

Meanwhile, Grok for Government is being deployed through SpaceX's Starshield AI framework, an enterprise network backed by Starlink satellite systems. The military has framed Grok's integration in broader operational terms, emphasizing its capability to assist logistics personnel with supply chain oversight and streamline market analysis for defense procurement officers.

The arrival of OpenAI and xAI software on the platform underscores the notable absence of Anthropic's Claude model. The frontier lab was classified as a supply-chain risk by the Trump administration after refusing to grant the military unrestricted operational use of its models without safety guardrails. Anthropic is actively contesting that regulatory designation in federal court.

The rollout forms part of a wider Pentagon effort to modernize its technical operations through commercial software partnerships. Alongside OpenAI, xAI, and Google—whose Gemini model was available when GenAI.mil first launched—the Department of Defense has secured artificial intelligence contracts with tech vendors including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI.
