Schools Push Back Against AI as Edtech Playbook Faces Scrutiny
Educational institutions and parents are questioning the rapid rollout of artificial intelligence in classrooms, drawing lessons from a decade of corporate-backed coding initiatives.

Artificial intelligence developers are attempting to embed their software into primary and secondary education by leveraging strategies first popularized by major technology firms over the past decade and a half, according to an interview with New York Times education technology journalist Natasha Singer first reported by The Verge. However, unlike earlier waves of corporate-driven technology rollouts in schools, the introduction of AI is encountering significant resistance from school administrators, educators, and parents.
In her new book, Coding Kids, Singer details how the technology sector established a powerful foothold in public classrooms starting around 15 years ago. During that period, tech companies promoted computer science education as an essential gateway to lucrative careers, warning that students without programming experience would fall behind in the modern workforce. By supplying free curricula, hardware, and instructional materials, technology firms persuaded school districts to incorporate their tools, effectively training a future workforce on proprietary platforms while cultivating a generation of brand-loyal consumers.
According to Singer’s research, major corporations integrated their proprietary software directly into Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles courses. For instance, Apple developed educational materials built around its Swift programming language, while Microsoft incorporated its video game Minecraft into instructional programs. Singer noted that this direct corporate involvement in public education parallels practices in the medical industry, where healthcare professionals trained on a specific brand of proprietary medical device rarely switch to competing alternatives later in their careers.
Google similarly expanded its footprint across K-12 education through the mass distribution of low-cost Chromebook laptops during the 2010s. The adoption of Google’s hardware and its Google Classroom software suite accelerated significantly during school closures brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, positioning the search giant as a foundational infrastructure provider for school districts nationwide. In addition to direct corporate programs, industry-funded organizations like Code.org—founded by entrepreneur Hadi Partovi and backed by tech leaders including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg—promoted national campaigns such as the 'Hour of Code' to drive widespread student participation in programming basics.
While academic groups previously attempted to introduce alternative computer science curricula designed to broaden student participation and foster critical analysis of technology, industry-backed initiatives dominated classroom practices for years. Today, however, the economic promises of early coding initiatives are coming under pressure. Recent graduates who were encouraged to pursue coding careers now face a contracting market for entry-level software jobs. Simultaneously, international research has repeatedly shown that adding digital devices to classrooms does not reliably improve academic outcomes, leading some school districts to abandon or scale back their reliance on hardware like Chromebooks.
This growing skepticism is shaping the public reaction to artificial intelligence in schools. Rather than accepting AI tools without reservation, several major school districts are taking preemptive regulatory action. New York City, which operates the largest public school system in the United States, recently prohibited elementary and middle schools from utilizing AI tools in classrooms for the upcoming academic year. The following day, Los Angeles officials instituted an even broader policy restriction that covers high school students as well.
Singer observed that parents and educators are increasingly advocating for instructional models that teach students how technology functions and affects society, rather than simply training them to operate commercial products. As school districts navigate the rapid arrival of AI, grassroots movements among parents and teachers are pushing for safeguards that encourage critical evaluation of software design, privacy, and corporate motives, potentially marking a shift away from the unchecked adoption that characterized earlier edtech cycles.
