E-commerce platform Shopify has expanded its agentic commerce capabilities by enabling browser-based artificial intelligence agents to complete checkout processes across merchant websites, as reported by TechCrunch AI (https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/28/shopify-opens-checkout-to-browser-based-ai-agents/). The rollout diverges from approaches taken by retailers such as Amazon and Adidas, which have moved to block automated agents from completing purchases on their platforms.

Shopify previously supported WebMCP for storefront discovery and cart building, allowing browser agents to search merchant inventory and stage items. The latest update extends WebMCP support to the checkout interface, including Shop Pay. This architecture lets agents inspect checkout states, modify order details, and finalize purchases with explicit user authorization without relying on visual screen captures or HTML scraping.

The checkout integration introduces three specific tools: get_checkout, update_checkout, and complete_checkout. Working together, these tools let an agent review transaction terms, revise shipping addresses or delivery preferences, and submit the final order once approved by the buyer.

Gil Greenberg, staff product manager for agentic commerce at Shopify, confirmed the rollout across eligible merchant storefronts in a post on X. Greenberg noted that the tools offer structured APIs operating through Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to maintain commerce facts, manage required disclosures, and handle handoff requirements.

In addition to browser-focused WebMCP tooling, Shopify maintains a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for server-to-server agent workflows. Both approaches rely on UCP as a baseline protocol for product search, cart creation, and transaction settlement. AI agent developers including Muse and Instinct have established direct partnerships with Shopify for agentic shopping, with the Instinct integration announced alongside the checkout rollout.
