Financial institutions are deploying artificial intelligence tools faster than their internal oversight teams can establish governance controls, according to reporting by SiliconANGLE . The rapid expansion of messaging channels, collaboration platforms, and automated software agents is increasing pressure on compliance divisions tasked with monitoring communications and identifying misconduct.

Data from compliance vendor Smarsh's "2026 Enterprise AI Trends Study" indicates that while 55% of enterprises are actively deploying AI technologies, only 26% report that their governance frameworks are keeping pace. Furthermore, just 30% of surveyed organizations stated they possess comprehensive capabilities to detect and manage unauthorized AI usage.

The governance gap framed discussions at the Smarsh EDGE 2026 conference in New York City. In an interview with SiliconANGLE Media's livestreaming studio, theCUBE, Smarsh Chief Executive Officer Kim Crawford Goodman noted that managing compliance requires capturing and archiving data generated across new AI applications without sacrificing visibility into potential regulatory breaches.

"Whenever these things are happening, it must be captured," Goodman told the outlet. "It must be captured in rich and good format, and it must be available for the intelligent capabilities of people like Smarsh to crawl. And now we’re looking not just for risks and bad things, we’re also looking for opportunity."

Smarsh claims its AI surveillance tools can reduce false-positive alerts by 70% to 80%, potentially allowing compliance teams to concentrate resources on higher-risk issues. To support automated workflows, Smarsh rolled out a Model Context Protocol server, AskSmarsh AI, and agentic capabilities in September to link communications data to enterprise applications while maintaining auditability.
