Techaro Implements Hashcash-Style Proof of Work in Anubis to Counter AI Web Scrapers

Web infrastructure project Techaro has deployed a protective system called Anubis to mitigate server instability caused by automated data collection from artificial intelligence companies. The software implements a computational challenge mechanism designed to significantly increase the processing burden on large-scale web crawlers, according to technical details published on Hacker News.
Unregulated data harvesting by AI firms has increasingly driven web servers into overload, creating downtime and making online resources inaccessible to regular users. In response, Anubis introduces a computational Proof-of-Work scheme modeled after Hashcash, the early anti-spam protocol originally conceived to curb email abuse.
The system operates by requiring client browsers to complete a small cryptographic task before site resources are rendered. While the additional processing load is negligible for an individual human visitor, the cumulative computational cost expands dramatically for automated operations conducting mass scraping.
Techaro noted that aggressive scraping practices have fundamentally altered the traditional dynamics of website hosting. The deployment of Anubis aims to establish a barrier that forces AI scraping operations to absorb higher technical and financial costs during data collection runs.
The current Proof-of-Work challenge is designed as an interim defense while developers construct more refined user identification methods. Long-term plans focus on fingerprinting and detecting headless browsers through techniques like font rendering analysis, which would allow legitimate traffic to bypass challenge pages entirely.
At present, the Anubis challenge requires active execution of modern JavaScript features. Security and privacy extensions such as JShelter disable these required capabilities, requiring users to turn off such plugins to navigate past the verification screen.
To address accessibility limitations, developers are working on a non-JavaScript alternative solution. In the interim, websites operating build versions such as v1.28.0-pre1.0.20260831142821-4578023de7b6 are maintaining user support channels through Techaro to manage technical inquiries.
