Trump Opens Social Media Poll Proposing to Rename Artificial Intelligence

President Donald Trump launched an online poll across X and Truth Social on Saturday, Sept. 19, asking users to vote on renaming artificial intelligence. Trump argued that the current term is inaccurate and inelegant, proposing 'Superior Intelligence' (SI), 'Extreme Intelligence' (EI), or 'Supreme Intelligence' (SI) as alternatives for the technology.

As reported by Mashable Tech, early tallies on X placed 'Superior Intelligence' in the lead with roughly 39 percent of the vote. Trump framed the query as a search for the best label for what he termed an expanding revolution.

The poll follows social media comments made earlier in the week in which the president dismissed concerns about artificial intelligence risks as a 'hoax' and affirmed that his administration will not restrict the sector's commercial expansion. Trump has also sought a meeting with artificial intelligence executives, though a White House official told The New York Times on Thursday that no meeting was currently scheduled.

The administration's deregulatory stance contrasts with recent caution from industry leaders and state officials. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman and Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei recently agreed the sector should decelerate deployment following the resignation of an Anthropic researcher who warned of existential safety risks. Meanwhile, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order on Friday establishing a panel to strengthen state-level safety rules, and reports surfaced this week that a military analyst generated an inaccurate report using automated software that escalated tensions with China.
