Apple Prepares Sept. 9 Launch Event Following John Ternus Executive Succession
Newly appointed CEO John Ternus takes the stage for Apple's 'Surprise and Shine' event featuring the iPhone 18 lineup and rumored foldable iPhone Ultra.

John Ternus officially stepped into the Chief Executive Officer role at Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) on Sept. 1, taking over leadership of the Cupertino, California-based technology giant following the 15-year tenure of former CEO Tim Cook. Cook had previously led the company since succeeding co-founder Steve Jobs, who served as chief executive from the late 1990s until 2011. The executive transition marks the start of a new corporate era for Apple as the management team prepares to present a major hardware launch event scheduled for Sept. 9, giving Ternus his inaugural public platform as the company's chief executive officer.
The upcoming Sept. 9 presentation, carrying the official title "Surprise and Shine," is set to introduce a broad array of new hardware products ahead of the crucial fall retail quarter. As first reported by Yahoo Finance, Apple is expected to introduce its flagship iPhone 18 smartphone lineup, featuring updated versions of both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Additionally, specialized technology publications including MacRumors report that Apple may unveil its first foldable smartphone, which industry sources suggest could be named the iPhone Ultra.
Beyond the smartphone refresh, the product presentation is anticipated to encompass updates across multiple core consumer device categories. Industry expectations point to new product announcements covering updated Apple Watch models, refreshed MacBook laptops, updated iPad tablets, and next-generation AirPods wireless earbuds. Apple is also expected to showcase a newly designed Home Hub device, aimed at strengthening the company's ecosystem footprint in the consumer smart home technology market.
Analysts anticipate that the prospective hardware releases will arrive with elevated retail price tags compared to previous product generations. The new iPhone 18 lineup is projected to cost 10% to 20% more than the corresponding iPhone 17 models, a price increase attributed in part to rising memory component expenditures across the supply chain. Meanwhile, the rumored foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to carry a retail price exceeding $2,000. The foldable handset and the upper-tier iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are scheduled to debut during the fall season, with availability expected in late September or October.
Wall Street research firms have projected substantial revenue contributions stemming from the new device portfolio. Investment firm Morgan Stanley estimates that the foldable smartphone product alone could generate up to $14 billion in sales for Apple during the December-ending quarter. Morgan Stanley currently maintains a "buy" rating on Apple shares alongside a $360 per share price target, representing a potential upside of approximately 9% compared to the stock's recent trading price of $330 per share.
The upcoming product announcements come on the heels of robust quarterly financial results recorded in Apple's fiscal quarter ended in June. Total net revenue during the June quarter rose 16% year-over-year to reach nearly $109 billion, while net quarterly profit surged 27% to $29.4 billion. Hardware sales were anchored by strong consumer demand for the iPhone, which generated $54.2 billion in sales for the quarter, reflecting a 22% increase compared to the same period in the prior year.
For the fiscal quarter ending in September, Apple management has forecasted a slight deceleration in overall revenue growth, projecting year-over-year sales expansion in the 9% to 11% range. On the company's most recent earnings conference call, executives noted that foreign exchange fluctuations are expected to impose a 2.5 percentage-point drag on sales growth, alongside continuing supply chain constraints. Nevertheless, executive guidance projects iPhone sales to grow in the mid-teens percentage range year-over-year. Management also signaled that corporate gross margins are expected to land between 47% and 48% for the September quarter, representing a decline from the 50.1% gross margin delivered in the June quarter.
Apple's equity valuation has experienced sustained upward momentum ahead of the product launch event, with shares climbing approximately 8% over the past month and gaining roughly 30% since April 1. On a year-to-date basis, Apple stock has appreciated by about 21%. Trading at approximately 37 times earnings, market analysts suggest the stock could experience short-term volatility or a price pullback following the event and upon the publication of September quarterly earnings in October, reflecting a common market pattern. However, analysts maintain that the impending release of the new hardware suite will provide a significant operational boost entering the December quarter.
