Cathie Wood's ARK Invest Resumes Buying Robinhood Shares Following Growth in Event Contracts and Platform Assets
ARK Innovation ETF buys over 55,000 shares of the trading platform after summer sell-offs, as monthly metrics show strong growth in deposits and leverage.

ARK Invest has resumed accumulating shares of Robinhood Markets Inc., reversing a summer trend of liquidating positions in the retail brokerage, according to reporting by Yahoo Finance. The investment manager, led by Cathie Wood, purchased 28,589 shares for its flagship ARK Innovation ETF on Sept. 4, followed by an additional purchase of 27,083 shares on the first trading session after the Labor Day holiday.
The transactions follow a period of steady selling by ARK, which had unloaded significant blocks of Robinhood equity throughout July and as recently as Aug. 26. While ARK discloses daily portfolio activity, the firm does not provide detailed context for individual trade rationale, leaving market analysts to parse the brokerage's recent operational updates for clues behind the shift.
The initial September purchase occurred immediately after Robinhood shares surged roughly 17% during a single trading session. Even with that gain, the stock, trading near $113, remains about 36% below its 52-week peak of $153.86. Days after the transactions, Robinhood released its monthly operating report for August, revealing expansion across several core performance metrics.
Among the fastest-growing lines of business for the financial technology platform are its event contracts, which allow users to trade binary outcome positions tied to macroeconomic data and election results. During the second quarter, event contracts generated $156 million in revenue—more than a tenfold increase year-over-year—outpacing the company's cryptocurrency trading business, which generated $100 million after suffering a 38% annual decline.
Trading activity in event contracts remained elevated in August, with customers executing 4.7 billion contracts. Although that volume represents a 15-fold surge compared to the same month last year, it reflects a 23% decline from July's 6.1 billion contracts, which itself had dropped 5% from a peak in June.
Robinhood's total platform assets expanded to $384 billion by the end of August, marking an 8% gain from July and a 26% increase year-over-year. Net deposits added $4 billion over the month, bringing trailing 12-month net inflows to approximately $74 billion. The influx helped platform assets recover from a 4% decline in July when totals briefly fell to $355 billion, while funded user accounts climbed to 28.6 million, up 1.9 million over the past year.
The platform also saw continued demand for portfolio leverage, with margin balances reaching $21.5 billion at the end of August. That figure is up 4% month-over-month and 72% higher than year-ago levels, remaining near the $21.6 billion record recorded at the close of the second quarter.
Despite the growth in underlying operational metrics, valuation metrics indicate high market expectations for the brokerage. Robinhood currently trades at approximately 39 times projected earnings for 2027, reflecting substantial long-term growth already priced into the stock.
