Investment firm Piper Sandler has initiated coverage on Intel Corporation with a Neutral rating and a $110 price target, highlighting how rising demand for autonomous artificial intelligence applications is fueling a tight supply environment for server central processing units, as first reported by Yahoo Finance. Analyst David O'Connor issued the research note on September 9, pointing out that Intel is uniquely positioned to capitalize on shortfalls in global server CPU capacity due to its extensive manufacturing infrastructure.

The note reinforces research published in April by Morgan Stanley, which first outlined how the transition toward Agentic AI workloads is redirecting compute bottlenecks from graphics processing units to general-purpose central processing units and memory systems. Morgan Stanley projected that agentic computing requirements could inject between $32.5 billion and $60 billion in incremental demand into the global data-center CPU market by 2030, expanding an industry segment that already generates over $100 billion in annual revenue.

According to analysis from Piper Sandler, the current imbalance between server CPU supply and enterprise demand is expected to persist for several years, with market equilibrium unlikely to be restored until around 2029 or 2030. Intel's existing fabrication footprint leaves the company well situated to absorb this demand surge. Piper Sandler estimates that Intel’s Data Center Group could achieve a high-teens compound annual revenue growth rate through 2030, providing sufficient financial top-line expansion to offset softer performance in the company's personal computer and memory product lines.

Financial metrics from Intel's recent quarters align with this growth trajectory. The chipmaker recorded $6.3 billion in revenue for its Data Center and AI Segment during the second quarter of 2026, representing a 59 percent increase compared to the same quarter in the previous year. However, analysts emphasize that long-term shareholder value will depend heavily on the progress of Intel's third-party foundry services and its advanced 14A semiconductor manufacturing node.

Initial client evaluations for the 14A node have come in higher than initial expectations, according to Piper Sandler's research. The firm noted that Intel executive leadership has made measurable progress in revamping corporate culture, refining product roadmaps, and regaining customer trust. Converting these early evaluations into major commercial contracts will be essential if Intel hopes to close its manufacturing technology gap with industry leader Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Intel has demonstrated technical momentum on this front, becoming the initial semiconductor producer to achieve high-volume manufacturing using ASML's latest High-NA EUV lithography equipment.

Despite these positive operational developments, Piper Sandler cautioned that Intel's current stock price already reflects a substantial recovery in manufacturing capability. The firm's valuation model indicates that current market pricing discounts roughly 15 percent of potential external foundry gains. That implied market share corresponds to the output of an entire semiconductor fabrication module, referred to as Fab-62, and accounts for approximately 45 percent of Intel's stock value at present trading levels.

Institutional backing for Intel showed signs of recovery during the second quarter of 2026. Portfolio data indicates that 138 hedge funds held positions in the company at the close of Q2, rising from 112 funds recorded in the prior quarter. Additionally, short interest in Intel stood at 2.9 percent of the public float as of August 31, 2026, signaling a relatively low degree of short-seller skepticism despite persistent execution risks.

Piper Sandler concluded that while the demand background for Agentic AI CPUs and early progress in the 14A manufacturing node provide genuine structural tailwinds for Intel, the company's current stock price leaves little room for execution missteps, requiring concrete evidence of contract foundry adoption to unlock further upside.
