Intuitive Machines Backs FY26 Guidance as Backlog Hits $1.8 Billion
Canaccord Genuity maintains a Buy rating on the space tech company following record quarterly revenue and a shift toward national security contracts.

Canaccord Genuity has reaffirmed its bullish outlook on space exploration and satellite communications company Intuitive Machines Inc., pointing to strong second-quarter top-line growth and an expanding backlog as key operational catalysts. In a research note released Aug. 18, Canaccord analyst Austin Moeller maintained a Buy rating on the Houston-based space tech contractor while adjusting the firm's price target from $41 down to $39 per share. The revised target still represents roughly 165% potential upside based on the stock's closing price on Sept. 1, as first reported by Yahoo Finance.
The research firm's optimistic stance follows Intuitive Machines' second-quarter 2026 financial report published on Aug. 13. During the earnings release, executive management reiterated its full-year 2026 financial outlook, continuing to project full-year topline revenue between $900 million and $1 billion along with positive adjusted EBITDA. Chief Executive Officer Steve Altemus highlighted the operational momentum, stating, "We delivered a strong quarter, highlighted by revenue over four times Q2 2025 as we executed across our programs, recorded unprecedented bookings and backlog, and positioned the Company for the next phase of growth."
For the three months ended June 30, Intuitive Machines reported record quarterly revenue of $206.17 million, marking a 310% surge compared to the $50.31 million recorded in the second quarter of 2025. Company leadership attributed the revenue jump to strong execution across its primary business lines, including commercial lunar payload services, omnibus multidisciplinary engineering services, near space network services, and spacecraft production programs.
The space technology provider also recorded significant order expansion during the period, booking $920 million in new awards during the second quarter. That influx pushed the company's total contracted order backlog to $1.8 billion, a massive jump from the $213.1 million reported at the end of December. A sizable portion of the expanded backlog stems from strategic acquisition activity, with $612.8 million tied directly to the purchase of aerospace firm Lanteris earlier in 2026.
A notable operational evolution during the quarter was the rapid growth of Intuitive Machines' national security business. Defense and government defense programs generated approximately 30% of total revenue in the second quarter, representing a sharp increase from just 3% during the same period a year earlier. Driving this pivot is the company's push into defense and satellite communications markets, underlined by a recent authorization to proceed on a multi-satellite communications infrastructure project expected to exceed $600 million in total value.
Under the $600 million satellite infrastructure contract, Intuitive Machines will deploy its proprietary IM 1300 satellite platform to design, manufacture, integrate, and support multiple spacecraft. Industry analysts view the award as a critical market validation of the IM 1300 bus architecture for large-scale procurements, expanding the company's presence in high-bandwidth orbit communications.
Despite the surge in bookings, financial analysts note several operational risks that could impact the conversion of contracted work into realized revenue. The $1.8 billion backlog reflects contracted awards rather than immediate top-line revenue, creating execution timing uncertainties for complex, multi-year programs such as the $600 million satellite deployment. Additionally, scaling manufacturing and integration for the IM 1300 platform across multiple spacecraft poses standard aerospace production risks, including potential schedule delays or budget overruns.
Furthermore, expanding into defense and national security contracts exposes Intuitive Machines to government fiscal volatility. Increasing dependence on federal space contracts subjects revenue realization to shifts in government policy, annual budget cycles, and administrative procurement delays. However, institutional market sentiment appears to be leaning positive; hedge fund data tracked by Insider Monkey across 13F filings for the second quarter of 2026 showed 33 funds holding positions in Intuitive Machines, up from 30 funds in the prior quarter.
Moving forward, market valuation for Intuitive Machines will largely depend on how efficiently the firm converts its $1.8 billion order book into recognized revenue. With Canaccord's price target contingent on the company achieving its $900 million to $1 billion guidance for fiscal year 2026, institutional investors will closely track execution across both lunar delivery programs and national security space operations through the final half of the year.
