Marvell Technology Inc. shares fell more than 10% following its latest quarterly financial results despite topping Wall Street consensus, drawing increased scrutiny toward the semiconductor designer's valuation, as first reported by Yahoo Finance. Speaking on CNBC’s "Squawk on the Street" from Jackson Hole, commentator Jim Cramer noted that Marvell represents an expensive equity holding unless management successfully executes on its long-term financial promises, at which point the stock would look comparatively cheap.

The chipmaker released its quarterly results on August 27, 2026, leading to a 10.28% share price drop to $216.62 during the next trading session. Even though the company beat revenue consensus forecasts by 1.2%, the modest top-line upside was insufficient to extend a rally that has seen the equity jump 155.27% year-to-date and 181.09% over the trailing 12-month period. CNBC co-anchor Carl Quintanilla characterized Marvell's current setup relative to market leader Nvidia as that of a "bridesmaid."

Marvell’s current valuation reflects elevated investor expectation, carrying a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 83x, a forward P/E of roughly 61x, and a price-to-sales multiple of 24.89x. The elevated figures rely on Marvell fulfilling its guide for fiscal 2028, which anticipates roughly 50% year-over-year growth in total net revenue and more than 60% growth in its data center division. With a modest dividend yield of 0.1% and a price-to-book ratio of 12.09x, the company offers little downside cushion if operational milestones are missed.

A major growth catalyst for Marvell centers on custom enterprise silicon, specifically application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) created for targeted cloud workloads. Marvell recently broadened its commercial partnership with a major hyperscaler, alongside a regulatory disclosure revealing a warrant structure that allows Google to acquire up to 7% of Marvell's common stock contingent on hitting specified revenue milestones. Chief Executive Officer Matt Murphy described the expanded arrangement as indicative of "the scale and long-term potential of the relationship."

Murphy told Wall Street analysts that Marvell expects its custom chip business to more than double year over year during fiscal 2028, followed by accelerated expansion in fiscal 2029. To support its valuation trajectory, Marvell must also execute a substantial operational margin expansion. The company’s trailing operating margin stands at 14.5%, but executive management projects non-GAAP operating margins to scale into the 38% to 40% range as fiscal 2028 advances.

The operational setup contrasts with that of Nvidia, which reported $96 billion in total revenue—more than doubling year over year—while management guided toward approximately 70% growth in fiscal 2028 in what CEO Jensen Huang characterized as a "supply-constrained outlook." Nvidia maintains a 63% profit margin and trades at a trailing P/E of 32x. Cramer drew a parallel between Marvell's current position and Nvidia’s setup from prior years, observing that if Marvell hits its targets, the valuation could compress to roughly 10 times earnings by 2028.

Market focus now turns to Marvell’s scheduled analyst meeting on October 6, 2026, where management plans to outline detailed financial targets for fiscal 2029 and provide expanded operational frameworks for its hyperscaler custom chip program. Murphy indicated that forward figures on the custom silicon side "would be a lot larger than anybody's been modeling so far." However, elevated customer concentration poses an ongoing threat, as data center contracts now make up 79% of Marvell’s total business, leaving the company vulnerable if major cloud providers shift custom chip design in-house.
