New York Federal Reserve President John Williams stated on Tuesday that he expects the central bank will not need to raise interest rates in 2027 following one additional increase this year, diverging from financial market expectations.

In an interview with Bloomberg News reported by CNBC Business , Williams said he maintains his view that one more rate hike is appropriate, but added that he does not see any current reason to tighten monetary policy further. Williams serves as a permanent voting member on the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).

Williams' outlook stands in contrast to interest rate markets. According to CME FedWatch data, fed funds futures pricing indicated roughly 90% odds that the benchmark overnight rate will end 2027 at least 50 basis points higher than its current level.

Within the FOMC, Williams remains aligned with a narrow majority. Of the 18 officials who submitted interest rate projections for 2027, eight anticipate an additional hike following another increase this year. The Fed implemented its first rate increase since 2023 in September and indicated plans for another hike in meeting minutes, with upcoming policy decisions scheduled for late October and December.

Williams noted that economic projections remain contingent on incoming data, pointing to underlying inflation trends amid price pressures tied to energy and artificial intelligence. He added that tariff impacts on consumer price growth have largely materialized and forecast that annual inflation will approach the central bank's 2% target by 2027.

In August, the personal consumption expenditures price index rose 3.4% year over year, or 3.0% when excluding food and energy prices. Williams reiterated that structural disinflationary forces remain active and projected that inflation will decline substantially over the coming year.
