Okta Shares Surge Following Q2 Beat and Upgraded Revenue Forecast Driven by AI Security Demand
The identity management firm surpassed Wall Street estimates on top and bottom lines while closing its purchase of threat-detection startup Permiso Security.

Okta, Inc. saw its shares jump as high as 29% following the release of its fiscal second-quarter financial results, which exceeded Wall Street projections across major metrics. The San Francisco-based identity management software company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.05 on revenue of $805 million, representing an 11% year-over-year top-line expansion, according to reporting initially published by Yahoo Finance and CNBC. Analysts surveyed ahead of the announcement had anticipated earnings of $0.97 per share on $795 million in sales.
The enterprise software vendor recorded net income of $116 million for the quarter, up from $67 million reported during the same period a year earlier. Okta also disclosed remaining performance obligations—a metric measuring contracted backlog—of $4.86 billion. That figure marked a 17% increase from the prior year and came in ahead of consensus expectations of $4.70 billion, signalling steady demand across existing accounts and future contract commitments.
A key driver of investor interest was the commercial rollout of Okta's artificial intelligence security offerings. During the quarter, the business launched general availability for its "Okta for AI Agents" tool across its customer base. Executive management noted that newly introduced products accounted for 30% of total bookings in the quarter, supported by dozens of signed contracts tied specifically to AI use cases, including a multi-million-dollar deal with a healthcare provider.
Addressing the industry-wide shift toward automated software workflows, Chief Executive Officer Todd McKinnon highlighted the essential role of identity verification in modern corporate infrastructure. "As AI agents transform every layer of technology, every agent needs a trusted identity," McKinnon stated in connection with the earnings release. The quote points to Okta's focus on securing autonomous software agents alongside human employee credentials.
Alongside its organic product development, Okta closed its acquisition of Permiso Security, a startup centered on identity threat detection. The deal is intended to expand Okta's capabilities in real-time threat monitoring, specifically tailored to protect AI agents and automated access systems. Supported by the quarterly performance and the acquisition, Okta raised its full-year sales guidance to a range of $3.22 billion to $3.23 billion, compared to its previous target of $3.19 billion to $3.21 billion.
Despite the strong quarterly figures and raised outlook, market analysts noted that direct financial gains from AI remain in an early stage. Bank of America upgraded Okta's stock following the report but observed in a note to clients that customer adoption remains in its beginning phases. The investment bank cautioned that disclosed AI metrics are still limited and that company management continues to project that AI products will not have a material effect on financial performance through fiscal year 2027.
Okta operates in an increasingly crowded cybersecurity market as major competitors pursue similar artificial intelligence initiatives. Industry rivals including CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Zscaler are investing heavily in automated security frameworks, creating ongoing competitive pressure for enterprise deal volume and pricing leverage.
Institutional positioning in the identity security sector shifted higher leading up to the report. Second-quarter portfolio data published by Insider Monkey indicated that 58 hedge funds held positions in Okta, rising from 49 funds in the first quarter. Institutional ownership remained higher among major sector peers, with CrowdStrike and Palo Alto Networks each appearing in the portfolios of 89 hedge funds during the same timeframe.
While the post-earnings share rally demonstrated market confidence in Okta's operational execution and product strategy, commentators observed that the modest size of the guidance increase sets a demanding performance threshold for upcoming quarters. With equity valuations reflecting heightened growth expectations, Okta will face continued evaluation regarding its capacity to turn AI security interest into long-term contract growth.
