Visual search and social commerce platform Pinterest announced on Aug. 28 that Chief Financial Officer Julia Donnelly will leave the enterprise on Oct. 30 to take a executive role at an early-stage private technology startup. Vikram Naidu, currently serving as vice president of finance and business operations, has been named interim principal financial officer while Pinterest's board of directors conducts an external search to identify a permanent successor.

Donnelly's planned departure concludes a three-year executive tenure marked by 11 consecutive quarters of double-digit top-line growth, according to reporting first published by Yahoo Finance. During the second quarter of 2026, Pinterest generated $1.18 billion in total revenue, reflecting an 18% increase compared to the same period in the prior year. The performance marked the fourth consecutive quarter in which the company posted sales exceeding $1 billion.

User expansion remained steady during the second quarter, with global monthly active users rising 11% year-over-year to 640 million. The milestone represented the platform's eleventh consecutive quarter of double-digit user growth, with Generation Z demographic users now comprising more than half of the company's overall user base. In its primary North American market—covering the United States and Canada—revenue accelerated by 18%, representing a five percentage point improvement over the first quarter's pace. Company executives attributed the regional acceleration to sales team restructuring and refined account management for mid-market advertisers. Average revenue per user within the region expanded 14% to $8.30.

Pinterest's profitability metrics strengthened alongside its revenue gains. Adjusted EBITDA reached $311 million for the second quarter, delivering a 26% margin that expanded by 130 basis points relative to the prior-year quarter. Over the trailing twelve-month period, free cash flow accumulated to $1.3 billion. The company utilized its cash reserves for capital return programs, allocating more than $2 billion over the year to repurchase and retire approximately 111 million shares of common stock.

The upcoming executive change occurs as Chief Executive Officer Bill Ready aggressively expands Pinterest's artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company noted that its open-source AI models operate at less than 8% of the expense required to run comparable closed AI platforms. Additionally, Pinterest finalized the broad rollout of its conversational assistant tool, Pinterest Assistant, to most U.S.-based users by the end of July. However, technology investments and operational changes drove expenses upward during the second quarter. Cost of revenue expanded 25%, driven by additional GPU computing capacity and the full-quarter financial consolidation of connected television ad startup tvScientific. Non-GAAP operating costs climbed 13%, driven by higher brand marketing expenditures and specialized AI recruitment, while ad impression growth slowed to 16% as previous gains in international markets began to normalize.

Donnelly leaves the executive suite as Pinterest prepares for a period of moderating expansion. Management projected third-quarter revenue growth to fall between 13% and 15%, representing a deceleration from the 18% rate recorded in the second quarter. Executive leadership pointed to several factors influencing the conservative outlook, including altered scheduling for Amazon Prime Day, diminishing foreign currency exchange benefits, and ongoing European regulatory actions affecting cross-border retailers originating in Asia. Furthermore, Pinterest continues to contend with aggressive competition for online ad budgets from major rival platforms, including Meta Platforms' Instagram.

The financial executive transition also coincides with recent insider transaction activity. Board member and co-founder Benjamin Silbermann sold 93,750 shares of Pinterest stock between Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, 2026, generating roughly $2.2 million in proceeds. The transaction reduced Silbermann's direct equity ownership by 87% to 13,996 shares under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan established in February, though he retains a significant indirect derivative holding. The share sales came as Pinterest stock posted a 34% decline over the 12-month period ending Aug. 19, continuing a five-year trajectory that has lagged behind broader market averages.

Institutional investors have displayed a neutral stance ahead of the leadership change. Hedge fund holdings in Pinterest held steady at 49 funds in the most recent quarter, unchanged from the previous quarter, while short interest accounted for 11.81% of the public float. Trading at 11.98 times forward earnings as of Aug. 28, Pinterest's market valuation reflects skepticism regarding whether new financial leadership can maintain momentum across automated advertising tools like Performance+ and AI offerings while mitigating macroeconomic pressures and slowing ad impression growth.
