Rigetti Computing Navigates High Volatility and Premium Valuation Amid Quantum Expansion
Despite a 73% pullback from recent highs, the quantum hardware maker maintains a $5B market valuation on low revenue and ongoing cash burn.

Quantum computing developer Rigetti Computing (NASDAQ: RGTI) has experienced dramatic equity fluctuations over the past three years, generating a return of more than 700 percent for early investors despite dropping roughly 73 percent from its peak. A $10,000 capital commitment made in the company three years ago would currently be valued at over $80,000, underscoring the extreme price volatility surrounding publicly traded quantum hardware developers.
The company originally entered the public markets in early 2022 following the completion of a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), a transaction that initially valued the quantum startup at $1.5 billion. After a period of muted trading activity, shares began a rapid upward trajectory in late 2024 as market enthusiasm for the sector accelerated, pushing the stock up roughly 3,000 percent from its trough in late 2023.
Even after pulling back significantly from that euphoric peak, Rigetti retains a market capitalization exceeding $5 billion. However, as highlighted in reporting by Yahoo Finance , the company's operational fundamentals remain in an early development phase. During the second quarter, Rigetti generated $5.1 million in revenue against an operating loss of $28.1 million, demonstrating the substantial gap between current commercial monetization and research expenditures.
The imbalance between revenue and operational overhead translated into significant cash consumption during the first half of the year. Financial disclosures show that net cash used in operating activities reached $32 million across the first six months. Despite those outflows, the company maintains a substantial liquidity buffer, exiting the second quarter with $541 million in cash and available short-term investments to support future development programs.
To further support its technological roadmap, Rigetti signed a letter of intent with the U.S. Department of Commerce for up to $100 million in funding disbursed over a three-year period. The agreement is intended to accelerate domestic research and development in superconducting quantum computing systems.
Despite securing potential federal support and maintaining significant cash reserves, the company's financial profile has drawn scrutiny regarding its public valuation. Rigetti currently trades at a price-to-sales multiple in excess of 375 times, reflecting speculative long-term growth expectations rather than immediate commercial revenue streams.
