SpaceX Options Volatility Drops to Fair Values as Shares Stabilize Near $140
After an intense debut, equity in Elon Musk's aerospace company has settled into a tight trading band, subduing derivative pricing relative to tech peers.

Equity in SpaceX has entered an unexpected period of calm following an intense market entrance and subsequent price pullbacks. Over the past three weeks, shares in the Elon Musk-led aerospace enterprise have traded in a tight $10 band centered around the $140 price mark.
The moderation in share price movements has significantly lowered derivative costs, as first reported by CNBC Business. Data from ThinkOrSwim shows that implied volatility for SpaceX currently stands at 57, a sharp decrease from levels exceeding 120 prior to the firm's most recent financial reporting. While SpaceX's early market action would have made it the most volatile equity in the S&P 500 index, its current reading would not qualify it for the top 25 most volatile positions.
Market participants attribute the stabilization to strong retention among company insiders and early-stage investors, who maintained their equity positions despite the conclusion of SpaceX's initial post-listing lockup window. Additionally, the stock's recent additions to benchmark equity tracking baskets, including the Nasdaq 100 and the Russell 1000, have helped temper price swings through steady institutional index demand.
Noel Smith, founder and chief investment officer of Convex Asset Management, who accurately anticipated the decline in SpaceX's market volatility in June, characterized the transition as an adaptation to broader market norms. "If you're a wild man raised by wolves in the forest you're going to have a different vol than the guy who lives in the city who's going to have an average personality of the city he lives in," Smith said. "SpaceX now lives in the city."
Options market pricing highlights the moderated expectations for near-term price swings. Weekly options contracts set to expire on Sept. 25 are anticipating a price fluctuation of roughly $16, which corresponds to an 11% swing. In contrast, derivative markets are currently pricing larger percentage price swings for several other established technology and corporate issuers, including Intel, Robinhood Markets, Corning, and Dell Technologies.
Open interest metrics compiled by Barchart indicate that put contracts continue to outnumber call options, with the open interest put/call ratio standing at 1.1. That figure reflects a modest decline from a historic high of 1.2 recorded on Monday, as recent trading flow has favored call options. Out of approximately 500,000 total options contracts traded on Thursday, data from SpotGamma indicates that 335,000 were calls—with about 168,000 of those representing outright call purchases—compared to 75,000 purchased put contracts.
Activity was heavily concentrated on the bullish side of the order book, with the top seven contracts by overall volume consisting entirely of call options. The single most heavily traded instrument was the 144-strike call option expiring Friday, a contract requiring a further 3.5% rally in the underlying equity during the week to close in the money.
Despite the sharp drop in implied volatility metrics, financial analysts urge caution before traders purchase derivative contracts outright. Implied volatility remains higher than the stock's actual realized price movement, meaning option premiums can appear deceptively low relative to recent trading history while remaining fundamentally elevated.
Addressing the option market dynamics, Smith noted that relative historic lows do not automatically create attractive buying opportunities. "Just because it's the cheapest it's ever been relative to itself doesn't mean much," Smith remarked, adding, "I'd say the vol feels pretty fair-ish here, but if you really pressed me on what I'd do at vol 54 or 55, I'd still say sell it."
