Bose Upgrades QuietComfort Headphones with Premium Features at Midrange Price

Bose has announced the release of its second-generation QuietComfort Headphones, introducing several high-end upgrades typically found in its more expensive products. Nearly ten months after the debut of the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), the new QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) now offer enhancements such as USB-C audio, advanced adaptive noise-canceling technology, and spatial audio. Despite these improvements, the headphones are set to retain their $359 price.

The new QuietComfort Headphones distinguish themselves significantly from earlier iterations, beyond their naming convention and 24-hour maximum battery life. A notable audio improvement is the integration of USB-C audio, which supports 24-bit/48kHz lossless resolution, enabling users to listen to high-fidelity audio while simultaneously charging the device. The headphones also maintain a 3.5mm jack, allowing for compatibility with analog audio sources like CD players and in-flight entertainment systems.

Bose has equipped its midrange headphones with its proprietary spatial audio rendering technology, Immersive Audio. This feature includes Still, Motion, and Cinema modes, which leverage Bose's TrueSpatial technology to optimize the spatial audio experience for various content, including music, podcasts, and movies. This addition marks a significant enhancement for a product line that has historically emphasized simplicity.

The second-generation QuietComfort Headphones also feature more intuitive noise-canceling capabilities. These improvements are facilitated by two additional microphones, enhanced adaptive feedforward performance, adaptive noise cancellation, and improved voice isolation. The ability to completely disable noise cancellation has also been added.

Feedforward microphones, positioned on the exterior of the earcups, are designed to detect and neutralize ambient noise before it reaches the listener's ears. Bose indicates that the improved performance of these microphones will particularly benefit users who wear hats or glasses, as the technology can compensate for an irregular fit. Additionally, the second-gen QuietComfort Headphones incorporate ActiveSense, Bose's adaptive noise-cancellation system, engineered to quickly suppress sudden, loud disturbances.

While the overall design of the QuietComfort series has largely remained consistent since the QuietComfort 45 headphones were introduced in 2021, the second-generation model introduces several ergonomic refinements. These include smooth headband adjusters, a synthetic leather headband pad, oval-shaped earcups, and a more relaxed clamping force for enhanced comfort. The layout of the buttons has also been redesigned to offer more tactile feedback for playback and audio mode controls.

Preorders for the QuietComfort Headphones (2nd Gen) are scheduled to commence on August 8. The headphones will be available in standard Black and White Smoke finishes, alongside three limited-edition colors: Eucalyptus Green, Dewdrop Mint, and Rosewood Mauve.
