A new web-based musical application named Guitoro has launched, providing an interactive virtual guitar and bass platform that runs entirely in the browser without requiring software downloads or account registration. Announced via a project showcase on Hacker News, the tool allows users to perform polyphonic chord progressions, practice rhythm patterns, and play along with songs using standard QWERTY keyboards or mobile touchscreens.

The platform separates chord selection from strumming mechanics to mirror physical guitar playing. On desktop computers, users select chord shapes with their left hand on standard letter keys while strumming with their right hand using dedicated keys—such as 'H' for downstrokes and 'J' for upstrokes. On touch devices, the interface displays chord pads alongside touch-sensitive strings that support up to five simultaneous touch points, adjusting volume and strum speed according to gesture velocity.

Guitoro utilizes pre-recorded audio samples from four physical instruments: a steel-string acoustic guitar, a classical nylon-string guitar, a solid-body electric guitar recorded from its bridge pickup, and a four-string bass. The software provides selectable acoustic profiles such as Warm, Bright, and Mellow, alongside electric presets ranging from Clean to Crunch, Metal, and Lead. Onboard audio shaping options include overdrive, distortion, fuzz, three-band equalization, room and hall reverb, and delay, accompanied by support for 10 tunings, capos up to the tenth fret, and a left-handed layout.

To assist with musical instruction, the interface features real-time visual feedback tracking hand mechanics and pick movement. Dynamic fretboard diagrams show finger numbers from 1 to 4, barre shapes, and muted strings while active strings illuminate and vibrate. An animated pick graphic models physical hand strumming, distinguishing between solid strokes that contact strings and faint strokes that pass through rhythmic gaps at playback speeds adjusted from 20 percent to full tempo.

The application includes a pre-configured library of 51 songs and classical compositions, such as "Wonderwall," "Let It Be," and "Hotel California." During interactive song sessions, the software holds playback until the user triggers the correct chord, highlighting the upcoming key in green. A backing band module provides rhythm accompaniment across 15 drum styles, 25 basslines, and strings from 10 to 220 beats per minute, with support for custom chord progressions and ChordPro text processed locally within the browser.

For melodic playing, a dedicated Solo mode maps keyboard rows to individual strings and columns to frets, enabling single-note lines, pitch bends, and vibrato via directional arrow keys. Guitoro also provides utility tools, including a microphone-based instrument tuner compatible with guitars, basses, and ukuleles, along with a browser-based audio recorder capable of capturing takes up to 10 minutes in duration.
