Meta Launches 'First Draft' Tool on Instagram to Automatically Trim Reels Clips

Meta is introducing a new video editing capability named First Draft to Instagram, aimed at automating the initial cleanup process for creators producing short-form video content on Reels.

The tool functions by scanning selected video segments to detect and remove dead space, silent intervals, and pauses without requiring manual trimming from the user. By stripping away these idle moments automatically, Meta intends to streamline the production pipeline so creators can dedicate more time to creative refinement rather than raw clip splicing.

To initiate the automated editing process, creators choose their raw video footage from the Instagram Reels Gallery and select the First Draft option. The system then processes the clips, trims the unneeded pauses, and arranges the edited footage chronologically along an interactive timeline.

Once the initial timeline sequence is generated, creators retain full editing control to fine-tune the video within the Instagram mobile app before publishing the finished clip directly to their main feed or Stories. Furthermore, the feature can be applied immediately following the capture of new video footage recorded through Instagram's built-in camera interface.

Notably, Meta omitted any reference to artificial intelligence in its official announcement for First Draft. As first reported by Engadget, citing details from The Verge, the lack of AI branding stems from Meta classifying the underlying technology as machine learning rather than generative artificial intelligence.

This technical distinction sets First Draft apart from Meta's recent product strategy across Instagram, which has seen a push toward AI functionality. Recent additions to the platform include integrating Meta AI directly into user direct messaging and deploying prompt-based tools designed to edit Stories.

The release of First Draft follows Meta's April 2025 launch of Edits, a dedicated standalone mobile video editing app developed to offer creators various automated tools for making Reels. First Draft builds on Meta's efforts to expand native editing utilities directly within the main social media application.

Regarding availability and hardware deployment, Meta confirmed that First Draft will launch initially for users on iOS devices. The social media parent company has not yet announced a scheduled release timeframe for Android devices.
