OpenAI Introduces Unlimited Text Chats for ChatGPT Free Tier

OpenAI is eliminating restrictions on text-based interactions for all users of ChatGPT, a platform that recently surpassed one billion weekly users. The company confirmed this enhancement, which will integrate the new GPT-5.6 Luna model as the default for both Free and Go account holders, replacing the prior GPT-5.5.

This update introduces a 'Think' button for Free and Go users, allowing them to select a higher reasoning capability when addressing complex inquiries. However, separate limitations will remain in effect for functionalities involving files, images, voice, and image generation.

The changes also extend to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, who will now utilize an upgraded GPT-5.6 Sol model. This advanced model is designed for improved efficiency in tasks such as asking questions, conducting web research, offering advice, planning, writing, and facilitating decision-making. OpenAI indicates that this new iteration of the model will produce more concise and robust responses.

It is important to note that this GPT-5.6 Sol version is distinct from the one deployed for Codex and Work applications, which remains unaltered. Plus and Pro users additionally gain a 'thinking slider,' enabling them to adjust the model's processing depth for a given query, based on its complexity and the steps required for a solution.

According to an internal assessment conducted by OpenAI, the GPT-5.6 Luna model demonstrated a 62% reduction in factual errors when compared to GPT-5.5-Instant. The GPT-5.6 Sol model showed an even greater improvement, with a 68% decrease in factual inaccuracies.

The updated GPT-5.6 Sol model is immediately accessible to Plus and Pro users. The modifications for Free and Go users, including the new 'Think' button and unlimited text chats, are scheduled for release within the current week, with full access to unlimited text conversations anticipated by next week.
